The Little Dipper for Canned Soup

Day 264.

An entire 18.5-ounce can of Progresso Clam Chowder can fit in at Little Dipper!

This is so exciting that when my friend
JeniJen calls you don't even say hello (you can see it's her through the Caller ID) and yell into the phone, "an entire 18.5-ounce can of soup can fit in a Little Dipper!" And because she is so wonderful and because she too understands how absolutely marvelous this discovery is, she will say, "that's great, honey."

I took the ingredients picture on the stove top because the counter was full of paper piles from school. You get too much paper from school. It bothers me.

The Ingredients.

Little Dipper
can of soup

The Directions.

Progresso is so nice that they now have pull-tops on their cans. I LOVE pull-tops.

Pour contents of can in Little Dipper.
Plug in.

Hide pretty much all of the work papers that have come home from school in the bottom of the recycling bin.
Go get kids from school.

The Verdict.

My kids really like clam chowder. I sort of re-created it earlier in the year with my fish chowder. If I'm remembering correctly, Mir's Monkey really likes my fish chowder, too. But you can't make fish chowder every day. That would just be crazy.

updated 9.23.08:

I received the following email today from a General Mills (they make Progresso soup) representative:

Dear Mrs. CrockPot,

Thank you for contacting Progresso regarding gluten in Progresso New England clam chowder soup.
It is our goal to help our consumers determine whether or not they can include our products in their diet. To accurately accomplish this, we believe it is best to refer to the specific ingredients listed on each product package.

However, we do understand that ingredients can be confusing, so we want to assure you if the ingredient label does not list wheat, barley, rye, oats or gluten containing ingredients sourced from these grains, then the product would be gluten-free. Sources of gluten are listed on the label even if the source of gluten is part of another ingredient (such as flavoring or spice). Because ingredients may vary from one package to another due to product reformulation, you should use the product's ingredient label to provide you with current and accurate information.

Additional information regarding gluten may be obtained by contacting your health care professional or:

Celiac Sprue Association/United States of America, Inc.

Or toll free: 877-CSA-4-CSA (877-272-4272)

We hope this information is helpful.
Sincerely yours,
[person from General Mills]

yes, what is it about school and paperwork? I've got two in Kindergarten, and the reams of stuff they bring home is the equivalent of a forest!

Oh, Steph, you are a wonder...I've been eating clam chowder out of a can for too many years, and i NEVER thought of just using it as a dip. Had french bread on hand, had chowder dip to dip into. Ah, my taste buds are happy. Thank you

How neat! Am i right in guessing that Progresso's Clam Chowder is gluten free? I recently had to start a gluten free diet, and am missing clam chowder! The store-brand has wheat starch in it.

  4. Yay for small victories!

I'm with you on the papers from school. My daughter is in second grade and comes home every week with more papers than we had when we closed on our house.

  7. What an exciting discovery. We had canned soup for lunch today, but it didn't look nearly as nice as yours. We heated it in the microwave.

  8. Running out of ideas? ;-)

Seriously, though, I am so impressed with all of your recipes and your dedication. I'll be sad when the new year comes.

Um...Steph...Is todays recipe really to open a can of soup and put it in the little dipper? I know we are getting on in the year and all...but canned soup?

Dude..you know you can do this in the microwave right? In about 90 seconds?

    That is an awesome success.

I made thai chicken curry in our mini crock pot last night. 2 chicken breasts chopped up, 1 can coconut milk, 1 head of broccoli and 1 packet of thai green curry mix. Super easy. Just enough for hubby and I.

Now I need to get another mini crockpot to make a meal for the kids in. One each even maybe :D

In other news I had success with my apple / pear butter in the crock pot. You really must give this a go -

  14. lol, the paper is completely nutty.

Lori and Carli, yup, this is the recipe. When I started this year my plan was just to use a crockpot everyday---I wasn't really thinking too far ahead that all of you guys would want something *different* each day. oops! BUT! this is so very cool because I have issues with soup boiling over pretty much every time I make it because I never only do one thing at a time.
this soup discovery has made my week. Maybe even my month!

Is Progresso Clam Chowder gluten free? I can not find online confirmation that is. The label doesn't list anything questionable---I think the safest thing for you to do would be to call the 800 number or email them on your own.

  15. A word to the wise:
Be careful with your crockpot on the stove top. Once I had mine there for the same reasons you had. While I was on the phone with a friend, I put a pot of water on to boil and walked away, of course, forgetting that the crock was on the burner behind. From my bedroom, I smelled something burning and then the alarms went off. Upon entering the kitchen, I was greeted with the most frightening scene. The flames were all the way up to the range hood and "soot" was falling out of the air. It was way up on my vaulted ceilings.
    Here's what happened:
The flame lit the electric-knob control from the crock on fire. I guess I had an electrical fire. So I used baking soda on it and quickly extinguished the flames.

Moral: Maybe you're better off cleaning up the clutter and using the counter for the crock!

PS We homeschool, and I have the same paper complaints, except I have no one else to blame it on!! ;-)

  16. Hey, Steph, I wanted to tell you what I do with all the extra school papers. (I think it's terribly wasteful. They should start doing emails or something.) Anyhow, I take all the papers that have one-sided printing (which is just about all of them), and I put them in a box. This is our scratch/drawing paper box. The kids love it because I don't care how much they use.

You might like pull tabs but all of us that suffer with arthritis hate them....your blog gives me a smile (and a recipe) every day.

  18. Sarah, that is very good advice, and I wanted to let you know that I didn't actually use the Little Dipper on the stove top, I just took the picture there because I didn't want piles of papers in the background. I should have clarified.

lol, okay. I can see how this could be seen as a non-recipe, but I swear this idea is genius. I ALWAYS overboil soup, and I have to get one kid at 2, one at 2:25 and another at 3:15. I could put on a can of soup, go get them, and come home to a good afternoon snack.

    I will do this. today.

My first time here and I'm excited!
Re: Progresso Foods message and labeling- they cannot make it simple enough for these 40+ year old eyes to see that the product is gluten-free. Hurrah to you for asking them!

  22. Yay! Gluten free convenience food! Thanks for contacting Progresso. I never would have thought to even read the label, figuring it has gluten in it already.

  23. I do a can of beans in my mini - I add a bit of mustard to it to make it taste more homemade (sometimes a little bacon). If I add the bacon I have to take out some of the juice as the can alone fills it so any extra stuff pushes it over the edge (literally).
